It is common knowledge that children comprise a substantial proportion of out patient visitors for every general practitioner. This is because of the reason that self medication is more prevalent among adults and even a person who takes crocin for his fever rushes his child to the doctor. Diagnosing a pediatric illness and treating them are pose special challenges. Children are not mere “little adults” and you cannot get away with just prescribing half a tablet for the school going child and quarter tablet for the toddler. The physiology is different, symptoms may be mild and complications severe for any child hood illness as compared to adult illness

While there are many books on Emergency Medicine (for adults), there is no comprehensive text book for Pediatric Emergencies that a medical student or general practitioner can read and comprehend. The books available are of the size of Gray’s Anatomy or Robbin’s Pathology and the already busy doctor is easily put off by the size of those books.

Also, more and more questions are being asked from this topic in post graduate medical entrance exams. Thus it is imperative that a general practitioner as well as a fresh doctor aspiring for post graduation needs comprehensive yet elaborate book on pediatric intensive care. “Basic Pediatric Intensive Care” by Sunit Singhi and published  by Peepee Publishers is a book that answers this quest.

The wonderfully written book, with a style that makes one feel, as if some one is instructing you standing behind your shoulders while you stand by the bedside, makes this important topic quite interesting.  

The author takes off with Basics of Pediatric Intensive care and follows it up with cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and recognition and stabilization of critically ill child. The reader can then saunter through Acute Respiratory Failure, ARDS, Airway management, Diagnosis and treatment of shock, Mechanical Ventilation, Arrhythmias, Coma, Status Epilepticus.

  5. Metabolic and Nutritional requirements

  6. Sedation and Analgesia

The next chapters to follow are Intensive care of critically Ill neurological child, general care, monitoring in intensive care Unit, management of death, pediatric critical care transport and organization and setting up of paediatric intensive are unit.

The appendices section which deals with quite a large number of topics starting from Universal Precautions to Intubations to Ventilator Evaluation to organization of CPR to Scoring system makes this book an ideal one for Intensive Care Units and Pediatric Wards.
