Review

A typical medical Student gets into the college after much hard work and dedication in his school final years. Most, if not all of the medicos were their school toppers. The initial euphoria that I am at the top of the world vanishes by the fourth year, when you have your school class mate (now doing engineering because he did not get medicine) call you and tell you that he has been selected in the campus interview and will be joining in a MNC and get a salary in 5 digits.

 

You (and me too) at that time was busy shunting between the wards to the class rooms to the library to the hostel trying to figure out a way to clear the (then) elusive final MBBS clinical exams. By the time we manage to waddle through the stenosed mitral valves and varicose veins and the indications of Caesarean section to enter into the Internship, we find most of our school mates (who entered into other fields) are in their jobs. You finish your internship, get your degree and registration certificate and go home, and when the old man next door asks you. "What are you going to do next?", you really have no answer.

 

You have no answer because you don't know the options before you. You had all the questions and no answers. And there was no place you can find the answers. The questions were plenty. To give a sample,

  1. What are the institutes that offer Post Graduation

  2. When does AIIMS conduct their exam

  3. Where is NIMHANS and how to apply

  4. Can I go abroad

  5. How much will it cost to go to New Zealand for higher education

  6. Is to nearly impossible to pass IAS taking medicine as an subject

  7. Can I get recruited into Armed Forces. Where to apply and whom to contact

  8. What is the scope of Sports Medicine, Aerospace medicine and who is conducting the courses

The list of the question is endless......... To get the answer to these questions five years back was an improbable (if not impossible) affair. Of late you can search in the internet, but internet has few drawbacks

  1. To search you need to know what you want to look for....... To search blindly without knowing the specific point is like finding a Plastic needle in a hay stick (if it is a iron needle, you can at least use a magnet )

  2. Many Medical Institutes don't have a web site (compared to other group of colleges which maintain very good portals)

  3. Most of the sites have just the index page and you can hardly find any details

  4. Sites are often out of date

  5. Few sites are hosted in servers that they are offline most of the time

Luckily for the present generation, there is an wonderful book by Sambit K Das, published by PARAS Publishing that comes with the Title "Beyond MBBS" and is aptly named as the Doctor's Wish Manual with the slogan "Build your future"  The very fact that there is a book in A4 size of more that 1000 pages that shows your option is a moral booster for all those who seems to be in a dead end after their MBBS
